Dominic Clemence MA (RCA): Photographer, Painter and Filmmaker
Originally I studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London and then, after a period working in advertising and as an animator (1981), did a further BA at the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication) where I studied Film, Photography and Television. I worked for some years as an advertising and editorial photographer, producer and corporate filmmaker before studying for an MA at the Royal College of Art. I left The Royal College with a distinction in 1992.
Since then I have worked fulltime in photography, film and television. Everyone who watches television or looks inside magazines will have come by my work. I have regularly published in Homes and Gardens, Interiors Magazine, I.D. Grazia and Elle. I have taken photographs for theatre including Sadler’s Wells, RSC, Hampstead, Propeller and masses of rep. In recent years most of my work has been on television where I work freelance as a Director of Photography and as a director. My television work has been largely for single films, short series films and high-end series television. I have been responsible for such shows as Silent Witness, Wire in the Blood and Kingdom as well as films and mini series such as Messiah, Torn, Sirens and 35 other films. Many younger viewers will be familiar with a recent project for BBC called Hetty Feather, the BAFTA nominate series for children, a kind of Downton Abbey for kids. If you have children, ask them about it.
My interest in image making has never waned and I continue to draw and paint, often crossing media and methods. This is something that has interested me since I was first at art school; combining the absolutism of photography with the expressionism of painting.
It is gratifying to see my personal work beginning to sell regularly now. Five pieces have recently been commissioned for by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow, Poland (MOCAK). The ‘Out in the English Mid East’ series of original limited edition prints proving particularly popular. The series is still growing and you will be able to find new images appearing on this website. I am hoping for a show at The Photographers Gallery, London in 2019/20. The large prints are limited to an edition of only 10 signed and authenticated silver gelatin prints mounted on aluminium panel (PoA).
Also coming up, will be a new series called ‘People I Met at the Weekend’, a startling set of portraits of selected characters I have spoken to and photographed. Each image is accompanied with a short transcript of an interview I have with them at the time, giving an insight into a moment that determined their lives. The images and stories are reflective and fascinating, making us look afresh at people, some of whom are quite close to us, and others we may prefer to pass by. These pictures will be published as a regular blog (follow: people I met at the weekend) and will be published as a set in the future. Images can be purchased individually by contacting me through this website. All images are limited edition of 50, printed as C-type (colour), or Silver Gelatin (black and white) photographic prints and mounted on aluminum sheet (exhibition print, higest standard finish).
